When Lauren was little, she pulled a boiling pot of water off the stove and on to her shoulder. She always cites this as a traumatic event, but looking through dad’s photos, I can’t help but think of how traumatic it must have been for mom and dad, too. But I’m left with so many questions. I wonder what these two were discussing. I wonder what dad talked to Lauren about in these moments. I wonder what color the balloon was — in what has become an iconic family photo.
